The emerging fusion between the genomics and the metabolism fields will become instrumental for holistic roadmapping of physiology in the future
The combination of metabolic characterization and next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies gave rise to the functional genomics field. Recently, this field has developed and massively refined methodologies allowing for global and meticulous mapping of mechanisms controlling metabolism during dietary interventions and/or disease. I am utilizing a number of NGS-related techniques in combination with metabolic phenotyping to address global effects of dietary and thermostatic challenges on transcriptional and metabolic function especially in the brown adipose tissue. The overall aim of this is to better understand metabolic homeostasis and to understand how the organism copes with dynamic changes in energy status on a cellular level. This will hopefully provide novel molecular targets, paving the way for new therapeutic treatments of metabolic diseases in the future.
