"Large proportion of the human genome is functionally relevant despite being non-protein coding and noncoding RNAs are more versatile than just serving as a blueprint for building proteins!"
Application of transcriptome-wide profiling approaches led to an outburst in the number of noncoding transcripts, the most abundant class being long non coding RNAs (LncRNAs). Although a significant proportion of the genome encodes these multifaceted RNAs, their role in (epigenetic) control of gene expression as well as their contribution to normal and pathological signaling pathways remain enigmatic. I am interested in the identification and functional characterization of lncRNAs in glucose metabolism with the aim of targeted therapeutics design to combat the obesity and obesity-associated diseases.
